A B O U T T H I S A R T • J U L Y 2 0 1 2Naive Art and The Simple Life Many naïve or primitive artists, including me, want to point out in their artworks how good life can be, and another theme they love to explore is the color, bounty and wildness of the natural world. The joy of just living and of the simple life, urban life, also life in the country and wild nature, are what I, also, try to represent, most often in a scene that is out somewhere in the natural world, but sometimes in a place of urban storefronts, or a place that features bicycles, etc. I paint things that have personal meaning, that are part of my biography, or are things I value a lot, at least from a distance, and try to paint them in a way that balances forces. My projects usually promote depth, but insist on flatness at the same time. The experience of creating opposites is so satisfying it lures me on to paint new experiments, but what the end result is depends on what subjects I have attempted. This balancing act comes from a strong bent. I would not have it any other way. When I consider my canvases after they are done, they seem to belong to a kind of naïve art. |
